Rocio’s Story

When I was fourteen, I found out I was pregnant.  I thought my life was over. I thought I had ruined any chance of a future.  Thoughts filled my mind like . . . “What about school? What are people going to say?”

But then, it hit me.  It wasn’t about me anymore.  It was about bringing my daughter into the world and raising her.

When I was 17, I had my 2nd daughter but I still didn’t give up on school. In addition to caring for my two children, I also helped my mom with my siblings, getting them to school, picking them up and working 40 hours a week at Burger King.

I started working at Burger King when I was 16 and when I turned 18, my manager asked me to be her assistant manager. I had no choice but to accept.  I never thought at a young age, I would become a manager!

Coming to Street School was the best decision I have ever made. The teachers are amazing.  They have patience, they treat us like adults and they help be successful.  The counselors help us with college plans and other resources we need.  They are ALWAYS there.

I like Street School because it is small and the classes are small.  Teachers are more hands on and we take many field trips that help us to learn the subject matter.  It is calm and focused!

I have had people tell me that with my hard work and success thus far, I will go far.  I will always respond that I know I will go far because I have faith in myself and I will never give up no matter what situation I am in.

I do this not only for myself, but for my daughters.  I want to show them that no matter what, never give up on your dreams.  I made a promise to three special people that I will graduate.  I here I am – a high school graduate! I did it for myself and for the people I love.
